Spark Candle has it all -- the looks of her dam, and the versatility of her sire to win at distances ranging from 5.5 furlongs to 10 furlongs. We are excited for her future as she begins her first season on the track.
The sire of Spark Candle is Lonhro, a champion racehorse and sire who was nicknamed during his racing days the "Black Flash". Lonhro raced from two to five years of age and won 26 races, including 25 stakes races, ranging in distance from 5.5 furlongs to 10 furlongs. These included 11 Group One wins and 18 wins at weight-for-age. His defeated foes included racing greats Makybe Diva and Sunline, two of the finest mares to ever grace the Australian turf. Lonhro would end up earning over $5.7 million in his four-year career, and retired to stud as the highest priced domestic first year stallion. Once there, he quickly assured doubters that he was worth the price, siring Group 1 winners Denman, Beaded, and Benfica, and also 2yo Triple Crown winner Pierro. Lonhro was from the first crop of the champion Octagonal out of the Group One-placed Shadea (by Straight Strike), who also produced the Group One winner Niello (a younger, full-brother to Lonhro).
Spark Candle is the first of only four foals from Admire Groove, whose pedigree reads like a "who's who" of Japanese racing and breeding. Admire Groove sold as a yearling for 230 million yen, a record at the time in Japan for a female foal. Her sire was Sunday Silence, the Kentucky Derby winner who established a breeding dynasty in Japan, and whose influence to that nation is comparable to that of Northern Dancer or Mr Prospector in the United States. Admire Grove, who was a champion while racing, is out of the brilliant mare Air Groove, a Japanese Oaks winner who earned over $8 million, and was named Horse of the Year during her racing career. Her sire, Tony Bin, and damsire, Northern Taste, had held the title of Japanese Leading Sire a combined 11 years.
