The first foal out of a Hall of Famer, and is by a Hall of Famer! Tall Ship is by Deep Impact, a phenomenon in Japan who won the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas), and Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) to complete the Japanese Triple Crown, in a career that also saw him win the Arima Kinen and Japan Cup, two of Japan's most prestigious events, and finish third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. In his first three crops at stud, Deep Impact has sired Gentildonna, another Triple Crown winner, as well as Champion 2 year old filly Joie De Vivre, and Tokyo Yushun winner Deep Brilliante. Deep Impact had a pedigree to match that talent, as well. His sire, Sunday Silence, was Champion Three Year Old, Horse of the Year, and won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and the Breeders Cup Classic. At stud in Japan, Sunday Silence sired the winners of 20 of the 22 Grade 1 races in Japan, and the earners of over $800 million, on the way to being named Leading Sire 12 straight years. Deep Impact's dam Wind In Her Hair, by Alzao, was a Group One winner in Germany, and was second in the Oaks Stakes in Britain. She also produced Black Tide, a Grade 2 winner of nearly $1 million, and Grade 3 winner Veil of Avalon.
The dam of Tall Ship is Vodka, one of the all time best mares in Japan. Vodka was a Champion Two Year Old Filly, followed that up by becoming only the third filly to ever win the Japanese Derby, and at four claimed wins in both the G1 Yasuda Kinen, and G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn). If that wasn't enough, Vodka returned at 5 to capture another Yasuda Kinen, the G1 Victoria Mile, and culminated her career with a nose victory in the Japan Cup. In all, Vodka earned championships at 2, 4, and 5, was Horse of the Year at both 4 and 5, and at 3 was awarded a JRA Special Achievement Award for her historic win over males in the Tokyo Yushun. At the conclusion of her racing career, Vodka was inducted into the JRA Hall of Fame. Vodka was sired by Tanino Gimlet, also a Derby winner, and the broodmare sire of Vodka, Rousillon, was a champion miler in England.
Tall Ship is bred to be a good one with a pedigree like that, and we think he might just indeed be that. Tall Ship is available for a limited book of mares in 2013, so reserve your place now, before he's gone.
